5 Quick Tips for Training Your Dog!
It’s a brand-new year so how about some new goals? If you missed the blog, “Five New Year’s Resolutions to Share with Your Dog,” you can read it here!
Back in August, we wrote about why lifetime training is critical not only for the service dog, but for your family dog as well! Remember, training does not have to be hard! In fact, it should be FUN for you and your dog.
So let’s take a look at 5 quick (and easy) training tips you can use in this new year to be a more effective dog trainer!
The Meaning of All Dog Training
Since the first modern dog training guide in 1930 to our current positive and fear-free training methods, the goal remains the same! Teaching our dogs to be happy, confident and well-mannered!
Below are five quick tips to use when training your furry best friend for the best results!
Calm, Patient & Confident!
Remember, your dog always picks up on your energy! So stay calm and patient. If you find yourself getting frustrated, take a break.
ONE COMMAND - OR SKILL - AT A TIME
Most dogs are eager to learn and please their human! Set your dog (and yourself!) up for success by taking it slow and teaching one skill at a time so your dog can learn quicker!
VERBAL COMMANDS / HAND GESTURES
Give some thought to the verbal commands you want to use with your dog. Use verbal cues that are easy for you to remember and pair with hand gestures when your dog is far away and may not be able to hear your voice.
Make it FUN!
Keep it FUN and keep training sessions short. Make learning a game and your dog will reward you with faster learning!
Use Appropriate Rewards
Also remember, not all dogs are motivated by the same reward! Some dogs are highly motivated by food, others by praise or even their favorite toy! Especially in the beginning, use what works best for your K9.
By consistently following these tips, both you and your dog will look forward to training and learning together!
