New Year's Eve: How to Keep Your Pet Calm!
Loud, unpredictable fireworks and explosions of light are often stressful for our pets and can trigger their natural flight response.
Use the tips below to help your dog or cat stay calm as you welcome in the New Year!
If you already know your dog or cat reacts negatively to sudden flashes of light and/or loud, unexpected noises, never take them to a public fireworks display. If you cannot stay home with them, hire a pet sitter to keep them comfortable and safe.
Do all potty breaks early before any outdoor festivities begin.
Compression shirts (like a Thunder Shirt) can help calm and soothe dogs (and some cats) with a snug hug offering a feeling of well-being through gentle pressure. (Get them used to wearing it beforehand.)
Soft music, white noise or the TV can also help mask outside noise.
Keep lights on inside the house to minimize the flashes of light outside. Cover all windows - or use a room with limited outside views - to help manage your pet’s anxiety.
If your dog or cat wants to hide in a safe place, leave them alone with their favorite toy or treat. Forcing them to come out may result in an unwanted bite due to fear and stress.
