Yes! Your Dog can Enjoy a Longer Life and Better Dental Health!

Brown and White Dog Running through a Field of Wheat

Imagine if our dogs could live longer and happier without succumbing to physical challenges before their time!

Recently a dog in Portugal was announced as the world’s oldest, living dog by the Guinness World Records at over 30 years old!

While there are many variants that factor into any life expectancy, there are things you can do to support your dog’s best life, health, happiness and comfort with the five tips below.

Feeding a Healthy Diet

A high-quality diet is essential for good health! Foods that have little to no processing along with fresh vegetables and fruits should all be part of your dog’s daily diet even if you feed kibble. Educate yourself on your dog’s daily dietary requirements and offer the best diet you can. Also, follow experts like Rodney Habib and Dr. Karen Becker for their expert guidance on “all things dog.”

Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Just like their humans, dogs should maintain a healthy weight for their breed, age, size and activity. Extra weight not only causes mobility issues especially later in life, it can also lead to other health issues like K9 diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and chronic pain.

Exercising the Body and Mind

All living beings need regular physical and mental exercise and stimulation for their best health! As your dog ages, modify his exercise routine, but don’t abandon it! Also provide challenges for your dog’s mind with games and interactive toys.

Regular Socialization

Dogs are naturally social creatures and need regular socialization with other dogs and pets, environments, smells, sights and sounds. Socialized dogs are happier and free from anxiety and aggression.

Preventative Healthcare

Regular visits to your vet are critical for prevention and can also help diagnose any issues earlier with better outcomes. Regular vaccinations, blood work, urinalysis and dental checkups all support your dog’s best health and longevity. Also, investing in pet insurance can help protect your dog no matter what comes along!

Better Dental Health Means a better Life for Your Dog!

Dental Health Affects Your Dog’s Overall Health!

There are some fascinating facts behind your dog’s pearly whites! Let’s take a closer look at some of these things you may not know about your dog’s teeth.

Dogs Go Through 2 Sets of Teeth

Puppy teeth (known as milk teeth) begin to fall out (or are swallowed while eating) giving way to adult dog teeth between 4 - 6 months of age. The root of the tooth is then naturally absorbed into the gum.

Your Dog Has More Teeth Than You!

Puppies have only 28 milk teeth while adult dogs have 42 teeth. Humans? We typically have only 32 permanent, adult teeth.

Dogs Use their Teeth Differently

Human teeth typically grind against each other to pulverize our food. But your dog’s teeth are designed much differently! The long and pointy canines in the front are designed for grasping, lifting and pulling while the large teeth in the back of the mouth create a slicing action due to their shape.

Extremely Rare: K9 Cavities!

The bacteria in a canine’s mouth is much different from our oral bacteria. As such, dogs rarely have cavities because they do not consume as much sugar as we do. The sugar consumed by humans is metabolized into acid which leads to cavities. So, when feeding your dog foods with higher sugar content (like sweet potatoes, bananas or other fruit), only do so in moderation.

K9 Dental Products are NOT All the Same!

When shopping for K9 dental products, keep this in mind, not all products are created equal or even safe for your dog! AVOID the two ingredients below in any pet dental product!
