Pet Insurance: What is It?

Like health insurance for humans, pet insurance helps cover the cost of medical care in the case of illness, injury, accidents or emergencies.

But just like human health insurance, there are a wide variety of benefits, deductibles and more when it comes to choosing coverage for your pet. Like all health care, costs increase, and coverages may change from year-to-year. But the right insurance can help manage costs for your beloved dog. But how do you choose the best pet insurance?

DID YOU KNOW?

Most pet insurance companies insure only dogs and cats.

But the ASPCA also insures horses and Nationwide will insure birds, snakes, rabbits and other “exotic” pets.

According to NerdWallet, pet insurance typically takes into consideration your pet’s:

  • Breed.

  • Age. The older the dog (or pet), the more you’ll pay. Older pets may also be subject to coverage restrictions.

  • Pre-existing conditions (before you purchase the policy or during the waiting period).

  • Zip code.

  • Reimbursements and deductibles. The more medical care you want, the higher the premium.

North American Pet Health Insurance Association:

The average annual cost of a pet insurance policy (covering accidents and illnesses) was almost $600 for dogs and $342 for cats (in 2020).

(For accident-only plans: $218 for dogs and $134 for cats.)

When searching for insurance for your dog (or other pet), carefully research each insurance company and their specific plans. Like our own health insurance, one size does not fit all! Look past the beautiful marketing messages and find a plan that works not only for your pet but also for your budget and overall expectations.

Much like when you choose a health plan to cover yourself and your family members, every situation is unique requiring different options.

When considering a pet insurance plan, make sure you completely understand the following options:

  • Premiums.

  • Reimbursement levels.

  • Deductibles.

  • Services covered vs services not covered.

  • Waiting periods for coverage to begin (days, several weeks or even a year for orthopedic issues!).

  • Lifetime coverages/payout limits.

  • Preventative coverages.

Pet Insurance: What May NOT Be Covered!

Again, be sure to read the fine print to avoid unpleasant surprises!

While most accident and illness insurance plans cover:

  • Surgery.

  • X-rays.

  • Ultrasounds

  • Diagnostic tests.

  • Emergency care and hospitalization.

  • Prescription medication; and

  • Treatments for cancer or infections,

you also need to understand what care options may not be covered! Coverages vary from company to company so do your due diligence and ask questions if you’re unsure.

Coverages that may not be included:

  • Alternative care (including acupuncture/chiropractic) and rehab treatment.

  • Behavioral Therapies for negative behaviors.

  • Exam Fees.

  • Prescription Diets and/or Supplements.

  • Congenital or Hereditary Conditions (including hip dysplasia or patellar luxation).

  • Final Expenses (including euthanasia, cremation or burial).

What Pet Insurance Typically Will NOT Cover!

As mentioned above, pre-existing or hereditary conditions are usually not covered by pet insurance. Always ask!

Other things typically not covered are:

  • Cosmetic or elective surgeries (declawing, tail docking or ear cropping); and

  • Breeding/Pregnancy expenses.

Also, understand beforehand if the plan you are considering offers routine, wellness and preventative health care for your dog/pet. Never assume this care is included!

Before buying, know whether your plan will cover:

  • Annual Vaccinations

  • Spaying or Neutering.

  • Teeth Cleaning.

Search for pet insurance brands through reputable trade associations like the North American Pet Health Insurance Association.

Final Note: Ask for Recommendations!

Ask your vet for their professional recommendations. Your veterinarian will often have firsthand experience with different pet insurance companies and can advise you based on your dog’s unique health and situation.
